Why I Left Engineering To Manage My Health Brand

Why I Left Engineering To Manage My Health Brand

Posted by Luke Coffey on

My journey into the health space was certainly not a straightforward one. Whenever I have conversations with people about my journey they always ask what the pivotal moment was that lead me into wellness. I started as an Engineer, working in various industries, which lead me into freelance Product Development (which I love and still do to this day) and now into my own health brand.

My Background

I went to University and studied Engineering, my previous roles were always very technical. I loved them, I enjoyed the problem solving aspect of it but always thought something was missing. When I left University I decided to go down the startup route and worked on creating automated vertical farming systems.

I was about 2 years into this company, with an amazing cofounder when I started feeling the stress of running a startup. I was overwhelmed, overworked and highly stressed. At this stage we were running our second farm and I was living on the farm. I was completely isolated from almost everyone I knew 3 hours out of Sydney, and this was a massive problem which I didn't realise at the time. Eventually I was became completely burnt out and had to make the tough decision to walk away from my startup and prioritise my health. It was one of the most difficult decisions I'd made, because I really loved what I was doing and believed in the vision.

For the next few years, and to this day, I started doing a lot of freelance contract work so I had the time to focus on myself. Even to this day I will prioritise my time and my health over a job. I learnt what working can do to you, quite early on, and I know that at the end of the day I need to make myself a priority.

After a few years of working freelance, setting my own hours I began to fall in love with the lifestyle. I know I would go back to a 9-5 role in the future, but I also know it would have to be a role I was passionate about where I could also ensure my health was being taken care of. This health journey is still continuing and I am sure it will last the rest of my life. I started researching, going to see professionals and making a conscious effort to focus on my health. I found the first step was consciously deciding to prioritise it. Once I had done that, I needed to figure out how.

Kickstarting My Health Journey

I decided to enrol in a coaching course and became a qualified Lifestyle and Health Coach. After helping many clients throughout Covid-19 I took a step back and realised it wasn't for me. I loved working with my clients, and loved helping them, but I wanted to help more people and knew Coaching was out of many people's budgets. It was then I started looking into the health and wellness space to see what was out there and where I could fit myself into a highly competitive and saturated space.

The main thing I helped my Coaching clients with was to help them create and maintain healthy habits that improve their health and business holistically. There is no point improving your business if you are suffering, because at the end of the day you are the most important asset to your business. It was then the idea sparked of creating lower cost products and services that helped people create and maintain healthy habits.

My New Health Brand

I did thorough research and decided to jump into health food products to start with. The first product I created was a unique destress cacao blend that complements your morning coffee or used in your evening routine. The idea behind this product was to tie into the existing habit of your morning coffee or your evening winding down routine to reduce your stress and anxiety. After launching the brand almost 4 months ago, I am still developing new products and plan on launching them early 2022. If you or anyone you know is in the health space and wants to connect, introduce us! We're always on the lookout to work with new partners.
